  •  Are you like Peter Pan?

Do what makes you happy not what you think will make other people happy!

You hear a lot of kids say, “I want to grow up so I can do whatever I want,” but really when you grow up you have more responsibility than ever. Children don’t realize that sometimes. Their view of adults is that they eat anything they want and buy lots of stuff, but what they don’t realize is you have to work for what you buy. At a certain age, children realize they don’t want to become adults because they have responsibilities. Peter Pan doesn’t want to grow up because he sees adult responsibilities as a bad thing when they’re not always bad. It is true that having responsibilities can sometimes bring you pleasure and allow you to experience life better. When you get to be an adult, you may be older, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be happy. Just be you. If you still want to act childish sometimes you can, because making yourself happy is important, and if that means not acting like an adult all the time, that’s okay. Being responsible for your actions is very important but, when you are off duty, act however you feel will make you happy.

  • What does the book Peter Pan mean to J.M Barrie?

James Matthew Barrie was a famous Scottish novelist and playwright. Barrie was best known for his book Peter Pan, he sold over one million copies worldwide. Barrie’s older brother David inspired him to write Peter Pan. David died ice-skating the day before his 14th birthday. Barrie tried to make his mother mistake him for his brother by wearing his clothes and acting like him. Barrie only got to be five feet tall, which was also an idea for the making of Peter Pan. Growing up, Barrie had difficulty leaving his childlike ways and tried hard not to grow up, similar to Peter Pan. Peter Pan was more than just a boy who didn’t want to grow up to Barrie. Peter Pan was inspired by many people in his life including himself. Peter Pan meant way more to Barrie than we realize. Barrie had to go through a lot to make Peter Pan. He went through his brother dying, being very short his whole life, and not wanting to grow up.

We have all watched, read, or heard stories about Peter Pan, but do you know where the name Peter came from? Barrie was very close to Peter Llewelyn Davies and his mother Sylvia. All the Llewelyn boys became an inspiration for the making of Peter Pan. Barrie made a story about the Llewelyn boys called, The Boy Castaways of Black Lake Island. Barrie decided to make Peter Llewelyn Davies the main character in his book Peter Pan. The real Peter didn’t like Barrie comparing and using his name in Peter Pan and got highly upset with Barrie.

Peter Pan was not just a character in the book Peter Pan. Peter Pan first appeared in the book The Little White bird. The Little White Bird was made in 1902 and written by J.M. Barrie. Peter was not the primary person in this book. At only seven days old, Peter flew out to meet fairies. In this book, all the children were birds before they started out. Peter was able to fly because he had never grown up, not even in his younger days. When Peter flew out the window, he went past Kensington Gardens and onto Peter Pan’s island. Upon finding the reader’s hopes written in a boat shape on the island, Peter would read them after dark.

Is the movie version of Peter Pan better or worse than J.M. Barrie’s version? The movie Peter Pan is based on the book so they take things away and add some things to it. The book by J.M Barrie is about the original thoughts and the original story, so you really can’t beat that because, J.M. Barrie is the one who created this wonderful story, and no matter how much you add or take away from it, it’s not going to be the same as the original; it’s not going to have that same feeling to it when you watch or read what other people have made of it. The Peter Pan movies are still great movies and more for kids to understand, and that way, you have a visual picture of how other people have interpreted it.

  • Why do the Lost Boys Keep Asking Wendy to be Their Mother?

At the beginning of the book Peter Pan, Wendy had to tell Peter what a mother is. Peter and the lost boys said they have never had a mother before. I think how they understood a mother to be, is a lady or a girl like Wendy, who tells stories and looks after them. The lost boys keep asking Wendy to be their mother because in Neverland it is just them and they don’t know any stories to tell each other, so that is why they choose Wendy, she has heard and told many stories. I think the lost boys don’t fully understand what a mother is. They don’t know that a mother is a woman who raises a child and takes care of them until they can go on their own. They basically just think a mother is just a woman/girl who tells stories. Since Peter will never grow up, I believe he will never really know what a mother is. If the lost boys really knew how special it really is to have a mother, I think they would change their minds about growing up because a mother or a father is the best person to teach you how to become responsible, and respectable, and, most importantly, they teach you how to love everyone.

  • Is Superman a Good Role Model?

In a world where Superman can be anything… he chooses to be the good guy.

Superman is a very kind-hearted and selfless superhero. I like to think of Superman as more than just a hero, he is a friend, a leader, and a very good role model. Superheroes/villains can choose to be the good guy or the bad guy, it’s very tempting to pick the bad guy because the bad guy has so much power to where they can just take over the world and basically own it. Choosing to be the good guy means you choose to help instead of harm, defend rather than destroy, and love more than hate. It takes a big heart to be a good, kind person.

Although we humans don’t have superpowers we can still be a hero, we can learn to be a little more like Superman, since we can’t fly and save people or use super strength to defeat the bad guy, how can we become a hero without powers? You don’t have to be perfect to be a hero, because everyone makes mistakes no matter how hard you try to be perfect.

First, you have to accept the fact that you can not possibly be perfect, so making mistakes is fine. Second, be patient with everyone, be patient with anyone in any situation. Third, respect everyone, if you respect everyone they will respect you “most of the time”. Fourth, Always do the right thing, if you always do the right thing no matter what, that is also a way for people to respect you and try to become more like you. Last, be kind, gentle, truthful, and helpful. These are some things that I learned from Superman because he is a good role model

  • Was it right for Jefferson to murder?

Should Jefferson Hope have killed Enoch Drebber and Joseph Stangerson?

In Arthur Conan Doyle’s 𝘈 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘦𝘵, Jefferson was the murderer of two men by the names of Enoch Drebber and Joseph Stanggerson. And the question is, was it right for Jefferson to murder? My answer to that would be no. I think that it is wrong for him to murder because I think it is wrong to murder anyone unless you absolutely have to, but in Jefferson’s case he did not have to, he chose to. What did Enoch and Joseph do for Jefferson to kill them? Enoch and Joseph killed Ferrier, and they kidnaped Jefferson’s wife, (Lucy). I think that a lot of people would have killed Enoch and Joseph if they did the same thing to them as they did to Jefferson.

Why do I think it was wrong for Jefferson to Murder? I think it was wrong for Jefferson to murder because it is something you can’t undo, if you kill someone they are dead forever, nothing you can do can change that, so people just like Jefferson need to think about what they are doing before they do it. Jefferson killed Enoch and Joseph because he wanted revenge and that is definitely the wrong reason to kill someone.

What could Jefferson have done instead of Murdering? First, Jefferson would have turned them over to the law. Second, I understand that he could not have just let them go but he could do something different than killing because anyone can turn their life around if you just give them a chance. I do think that Jefferson should have just tried to scare them in some way before he just killed them.

What does the bible say about killing? There are many things said in the bible about murdering/Killing. Genesis 9:6  “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image”. Exodus 20:13 “You shall not murder. Even though Enoch and Joseph are not perfect people, by any means, Jefferson had no right to kill them, and I think anybody should give everyone a chance.

I hope I have convinced you that it was wrong for Jefferson or anyone to kill/murder, I believe it is very important to love everyone and to forgive them no matter what, not only because it is the right thing to do, but because God said it is wrong, and you should always want to please God, and you should always obey him, and never wish for anyone to die.

  • Who is Sherlock Holmes?

What kind of person is Sherlock Holmes?

Sherlock Holmes is a brilliant, well-known detective, who lives in London at 221b Baker Street. In the book A Study In Scarlet, Holmes is known to be 27 years of age. I understood Holmes’ personality to be kind-hearted, observant, and very intelligent. Holmes has kind of a strange way of thinking. He doesn’t know things that most other people know. He only knows things related to his job (Detective) or very small details that he thinks will be important later down the road. Holmes doesn’t know about things like the solar system. He thinks it is very interesting to learn about but he doesn’t keep that kind of information in his brain after learning about it, as most people do.

Holmes lives with his roommate Dr. John H. Watson, Holms and many other people just call him Watson. The two men get along very well together in their apartment. Holmes tells Watson his ideas and Watson tells Holmes what he thinks. Holmes is very smart but it is better to have two people’s thoughts on one idea. Holmes is reached to solve cases in London when other detectives get stuck on a case. Sherlock Holmes is an expert in solving murder mysteries, “Sherlock Holmes solved 60 cases which were included in the stories and novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle”. ( How many) Holmes, in my opinion, is the smartest detective ever. He is very smart and observant.

  • Are Watson and Holmes good for each other?

In A Study In Scarlet, when Watson was looking for a roommate, he was looking for a man with quiet habits, because he can’t stand much noise or excitement. Holmes is not the description that Watson gave of the kind of roommate he wanted. Although Holmes is mostly quiet, he does experiments and plays the violin, but they do get along very well together. Watson states “Holmes is a little too scientific for my tastes”. (Doyle ch.1) This was Watson’s first impression of Holmes. When Holmes first meets Watson he says that Watson has been to Afghanistan. Watson asked how Holmes could possibly know that, but Holmes’s remake was, “Never mind,” as he quietly laughed. As the two are getting to know each other, Holmes shows Watson an experiment with a drop of blood that Watson is quite impressed with. As they finish the experiment and talk some more, they, later in the first chapter, agree to live together, so this is the first indication that Watson and Holmes like each other fairly well. The next day, in chapter two, they go inspect the rooms at No. 221B, Baker Street. For a couple of days, they were unpacking and getting everything situated in their new home.

In chapter two, Watson states that “Holmes was certainly not a difficult man to live with. He was quiet in his ways, and his habits were regular. It was rare for him to be up after ten at night, and he had invariably breakfasted and gone out before I rose in the morning. Sometimes he spent his day at the chemical laboratory, sometimes in the dissecting-rooms, and occasionally in long walks, which appeared to take him into the lowest portions of the city”.(Doyle) The way Watson just explained to us about Holmes, it seems they get along just fine together. He doesn’t mind too much about Holmes’ daily routine. There is no part in the book that says Holmes and Watson don’t get along. Yes, I do think that Watson and Holmes are good for each other, Watson gives Holmes someone to talk to and someone to share his ideas with, and Holmes gives Watson someone to keep his brain going. Holmes likes to play the violin for Watson and Watson enjoys it very much. I think overall Holmes and Watson are very good roommates.

  • Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

    -Characters in the book-

The strange case of Dr. Jekylle and Mr Hyde. First, I will talk about the most well-known character in this book, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. I will start off by saying that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are the same person. Dr. Jekyll is a large, well-made man, around fifty years of age. Dr. Jekyll is a kind well respected, intelligent scientist. He is a wealthy man who has his own laboratory which is where he practices making potions. Dr. Jekyll lives with his butler, Poole.

Next, I will talk about Mr. Hyde. On the website BBC.com, It says that Mr. Hyde is an evil, criminal mastermind, and I think that description suits him very well. (“Mr. Hyde”) Mr. Hyde has no respect for anyone. Mr. Hyde has such an ugly deformed face nobody can describe his appearance. If I were to describe Mr. Hyde I would describe him as an ugly, deformed, selfish, murderer. Mr. Hyde’s appearance symbolizes his personality/ethics.

Now I know that the person I just mentioned does not sound by any means like the same man, but they are. I will tell you how, Dr. Jekyll, as I mentioned before has his own laboratory where he practices making potions, he made a potion that turns him into Mr. Hyde, who is basically an ugly, murdering monster. Dr. Jekyll is doing this because he likes to be a criminal sometimes. So that is how and why Dr. Jekyll turns himself into Mr. Hyde.

Now I am going to talk to you about Mr. Utterson. Most of the book is seen from Mr. Utterson’s perspective, but he is also in the story. Mr. Utterson is a lawyer, so naturally, he is a well-respected wealthy man. Mr. Utterson is described in the first paragraph in this book as “a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty, and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary, and yet somehow lovable.” (Stevenson) Utterson and Dr.Jekyll are loyal friends.

Last I am going to tell you about Poole. Poole and Jekyll have been friends for a very long time. Poole has worked for Jekyll for a long time as his butler. Poole is concerned for Jekyll because when someone came to his house saying that they are Jekyll, Poole knew it was not because his voice was not the same and he was to short to be Jekyll. Poole goes to find help for Jekyll because Poole thinks something has happened.

  • Dr. Jekyll is Mr. Hyde!!!

Why do you think that Dr. Jekyll wants to be Mr. Hyde?

Dr. Jekyll wants to be Mr. Hyde because Mr. Hyde is not a good person. Like most people, he wants to be good, but now and then, even the good people want to do something they know isn’t right. It is the same with Dr. Jekyll. He is a good person but he wants to do wrong also.

Dr. Jekyll wants to do bad things without getting caught, so he turns into Mr. Hyde when he is tempted to do wrong. Dr. Jekyll is using potions to become Mr. Hyde and it’s working very well for him because everyone believes that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are two different people. Everybody says that Dr. Jekyll is such a nice guy, which that would be true because when Dr. Jekyll is himself and not Mr. Hyde he is a nice person. I am sure Dr. Jekyll wants to do bad things sometimes, while still trying to be a good person, but he knows that he’ll get caught if he just stays as Mr. Hyde.

In this book, and in Lord of the Rings, there is one thing that stood out to me as similar. Dr. Jekyll turns into Mr. Hyde because he is tempted to do crime. It’s sort of like Mr. Hyde is taking over Dr. Jekyll, the more and more Dr. Jekyll uses the potions to turn into Mr. Hyde the more tempted Dr. Jekyll is to keep turning himself into Hyde. This book is similar to a part of Lord of the Rings, Bilbo and the ring are similar to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The more and more Bilbo puts the ring on the more and more it takes him over, and the more he wants to be angry or mean.
